Get the Inside Scoop on Electronic Recycling!

When you PC recycle you don't expect this. Here you'll snap-up what happens to 70% of all electronics recycled in the west. And, what you can do about it.

According to the Basel Action Network and reported by the United Nations 70% of all electronics recycled in western countries end up in China and Africa to be recycled by hand in the utmost dangerous working conditions. According to Salon.com 50% of our recycled computers are shipped overseas.

A story of migrant worker computer recycling

The story I want to share with you today is about Han, a Chinese pc recycle, migrant worker.

Strapped with debt, he works 12 hour days while earning between (30-60 Yuan) $4.00-$8.00 per day. His boss keeps part of his, and the other worker's, wages to be sure they don't leave unexpectedly.

Without protective gear, like all of the other workers, he is exposed to the harmful toxins and heavy metals in the e waste he works with all day long. Electronic waste contains Bromine, Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs), Cadmium, Chromium, Lead, Mercury and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC).

Returning to his home village with money for his wife to repay some of his debt, he learns of his friend passing away. His friend from the same working environment contracted lung cancer and cirrhosis of the liver.

Back at work, the burning of ceramics and plastics is done for the separation of precious metals. This toxic mess gets dumped in the nearby river, where workers bathe, wash clothes, dishes, drink, etc.

Every night he rubs on a treatment to sooth the continued burning and itching felt in his skin. It has yet to be completely researched how toxic the environment, air and water are, in and around these computer recycling canters.

PC recycle responsibly

Apparently, the value of e waste being shipped overseas is far greater then being recycled here. In my opinion, companies that pay for your electronics to be disposed of are in the precarious position of needing to recoup those funds.

The choice for them may be to sell the computers and electronics for recycling overseas to foreign importers who use migrant workers for labor.

Because of this, it's not our regular policy to pay you to pick-up and recycle computer equipment. And we'll avoid shipping anything overseas to be recycled in those conditions.

We will however, recycle them in the most environmentally friendly, safe, single stream processing system. We then sell the shredded and separated commodity materials to upstream partners who reuse the materials in new products.

We are your one-stop source for free online storage, data destruction, disposal and recycling of anything with an electric cord; 100% focused on reducing, reusing and recycling responsibly.
