I'll cover:

  4. Exporting electronic waste to China
  5. Environmental benefits of responsible e waste recycling
  6. The truth of electronic waste disposal and your remedy
  7. How to get responsible e waste disposal

My electronic waste disposal story

It all started when I was in the position of wanting to eliminate 70 tower computers, monitors, keyboards, mice and three large printers I had from a previous business venture.

I realized the impossibility of recouping the investment I made for all of the machines I possessed. Although, the machines had already paid for themselves and profited the business I was in. I still figured, grabbing some money for the equipment wouldn't hurt.

I kicked around hawking the machines on eBay or Craigslist. After researching a bit, I discovered a huge glut of computers for sale on the market. This most likely being from the current economic situation having put a lot of people out of business.

Machines are everywhere for $50-$100 for excellent equipment. Thousands of which will never get resold. There are now sites giving them away for free.

The computer liquidation band-aid

Sooner or later my girlfriend discovered computer liquidation. I contacted a few of these liquidators and finally reached one. We agreed on a very low price of around $1,000 for everything. I jumped on the deal because of my next challenge of having to store the electronic equipment.

And a thousand bucks seemed better than a continuing decrease in value for my large pile of electronic waste. I thought the company was recycling the machines or selling them on eBay, or their own website. So, I believed I was helping the environment.

At the time I knew nothing about e waste disposal, recycling, liquidation, etc. It really didn't matter to me, until my discovery.

Here's what happened. While helping their driver pick-up all of the machines, we chatted about the e waste recycling industry. He mentioned that his boss would sell a huge box of motherboards to smelters.

The new term I learned called 'smelting'

I had never heard the term smelting before, but it made sense that someone would smelt the electronics and recoup the precious metals contained in them.

When the driver was gone, I received a call from his boss.

As we confirmed everything was picked up and in route back to his facility, I was still intrigued about his business. So, I asked a few questions regarding what he does with all of the electronic waste he just received.

He told me "they aren't the kind of shop that resells all the scrap on eBay or online, and that he'd never recoup what he just gave me that way." In fact they sell it to smelters in China for a large profit. I inquired more about this shipping overseas.

Suddenly the man became very irate and told me to never contact him again!

This behavior seemed very strange to me. Why would he turn on me, his client, so abruptly when being questioned about shipping e waste to China? Shortly thereafter I started my research of this industry.

Exporting electronic waste to China

I learned according to the United Nations, 60 Minutes and other sources that 70% of all electronic waste disposal from America and "the West" ended up in China to be hand dismantled by impoverished slave laborers for around $4-$8 per day!

The laborers melt the circuit boards by hand, using open flame and acids. Imagine burnt plastic ashes floating throughout the air! They then dump the non-valuable melted remnants and used acid on the ground many times close to a nearby river. While smelting the plastics, they would inhale the poisonous toxic fumes.

They would dump the un-recyclable waste components in piles right outside their doors or in designated areas throughout their village, to be left to rot and leach further toxins into the land there.

The entire population in and around these recycling towns contract illnesses still undiagnosed. 70% of the children have too much lead in their blood. The families all have to bathe, wash clothes, dishes, etc. in this toxic river water.

Water has to be trucked in from thirty miles away for drinking and cooking. Meanwhile, countless workers have died of cancers and liver diseases.

Environmental benefits of responsible e waste recycling

I couldn't stop my research until I decided something must be done. There has to be a better way. I gathered numerous benefits of recycling responsibly, such as these:

  1. Reducing waste of already mined materials
  2. Reducing waste of fresh raw materials
  3. Reducing energy usage in mining and refining of new materials
  4. Reducing air pollution from mining and refining of new materials
  5. Reducing air pollution from incinerating used materials
  6. Reducing water pollution from used materials in landfills
  7. Creating a fresh supply of similar materials used in manufacturing new products
  8. Protecting and expanding manufacturing jobs
  9. Protecting and expanding local and global competitiveness
  10. Reducing need for landfill and incineration techniques
  11. Conserving multiple natural resources
  12. Sustaining and replenishing the environment for future generations

The truth of electronic waste disposal and your remedy
