OK, enough about us back to the story...

After eight years, we finally installed 22 new computers and one new network printer in our real estate office. What a reprieve to use new top-of-the-line tools.

Does anyone remember Win XP? I didn’t think so.

The new hardware installers stacked up our old machines in the hallway, heading toward the back exit of the building, taking up most of the walking space. After at least three weeks of squeezing through there, it seemed there was no plan for our obsolete equipment to ever be disposed of, and for our hallway to return to uncluttered normalcy.

“What if there’s a fire or earthquake and we gotta scamper out of here, I thought! We’d all trip and injure ourselves, or worse.”

Being the Office Manager, my insight failed me regarding the aspects of having a ‘CLEAN and GREEN’ workplace. I poked around and no one suggested any particular appropriate methods for disposing of these electronics.

The dumpster seemed perfect!

My focus was solely on a CLEAN workplace, and I just had to do something. It seemed the dumpster out back was the perfect choice. I figured no one knows our passwords, and we deleted our files anyway after we copied them to our new machines. Piece of cake, right?

So, Friday morning one of the brokers and I started carrying out and pitching PCs, CRTs, keyboards, mice and the old LaserJet into the dumpster, out behind our building. We were all through, and right after lunch my boss returned to the office as usual.

At once, he noticed the cleared zone, which no longer stored our antiquated equipment. He asked emphatically, where are the used computers? I exclaimed with enthusiasm, smiling, awaiting my recognition, “we tossed them in the dumpster.” He looked to have stopped breathing, and was silent.

I was decreasingly expecting “thank you, good job.”

And, that’s not at all what he said!

Instead, he sternly remarked “see me in my office immediately.”

I followed him in as he appeared increasingly bewildered, and pale as a ghost. I sat in front of his desk awaiting the unknown.

He typed frantically at his keyboard as if he’d been abruptly electrocuted. Then he flipped his new 17” LCD monitor toward me, and showed me a series of YouTube news videos explaining the danger of what I had just done.

I learned very quickly - that which I was unaware of:

  1. That deleted PC, personal, and business files are still accessible to identity thieves who may get their hands on our old computers. And…
  2. Many electronics are built with materials that contain toxic chemicals and are regarded as hazardous waste.

Nevertheless, it’s estimated by the EPA that more than 180 million computers, televisions, and other electronics still find their way into landfills every year in the USA.

This mounting heap of end-of-life electronics equates to hundreds of thousands of tons of Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, Mercury, Bromine, Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs), and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) likely being leached into our Earth.

He gave me two choices...

“Get the 'e waste' out of the trash and have responsible electronic waste disposal done immediately” or well… he didn’t have to say it. After extricating all the computer scrap from the dumpster, (very FUN) and arranging it, I visited the AER Electronic Recycling website.

There I discovered free, quick and easy, very powerful, recommended resources for:

  • Free online storage, to copy your old files onto your new computer, and...
  • Free Department of Defense level, hard drive data destruction tools!

Next, I contacted AER and they swiftly and courteously picked up all of our machines, at no cost, for electronic recycling into commodity materials which manufacturers use in new products. All of it was free!

Last Friday…was I scared! --- My boss almost fired me! I am so grateful and relieved this has been handled quickly, safely, and securely. And of course, we are now truly a CLEAN and GREEN workplace, and I’m still employed!
