As you know, cell phones are definitely with us to stay. Having them can really get you out of trouble, and can of course organize your life, occupy you and give you close contact with everyone and everything.
But, what to do with these devices when they become outdated? They contain some toxic materials, which if put in landfills, in mass, can hurt our environment?
The big, bulky, $1.50 per min. cell phone
I've now gone through probably ten or so cell phones. Most everyone I knew got one within days after the story I'm going to tell you.
I'll always be thankful for my first Blaupunkt cell phone. Even with it's two antennas. One short one for local calls and one foot long one for long distance calls. Either of which had to be screwed onto the phone prior to answering or making a call.
That caused a lot of guess work and missed calls when the phone would ring. Although in the beginning, no one called as it was only for emergencies, and cost a $1.50 per minute.
My first cell phone saved our behinds
It was however life saving to have when my friends and I were on our way to Huntington Beach in my buddy Steve's old Winnebago motor home one day in 1989. We intended to hang out around a late night balm fire.
The transmission went out as we were moving 65 mph in the fast lane of the 605 freeway, south bound, getting onto the 405 south. There's over seven lanes of traffic to get to the right hand emergency lane there.
An impossible feat!
I don't remember what day of the week it was, but it was in the evening. There were at least fifteen of us on board at the time, me being the youngest.
Steve slowed the big vehicle down to a stop within feet of slamming us into the center guard rail on the left, before the emergency lane ended as the off-ramp curved ahead onto the 405 freeway.
The main door in and out of the big RV was on the passenger side. It would open up and let us out right smack onto the fast lane where cars were swerving and flying by at 70+ mph! That made exiting the stopped motor home a death defying obstacle that none of us attempted.
A cell phone call to the CHP
Thank goodness, I had that big cell phone. I quickly screwed on one of the antennas and dialed 411 to get the number for the California Highway Patrol. I don't think 911 existed yet.
After getting the number I handed the phone over to Steve's wife's dad, Leonard who was the eldest. As I was only 16 and had no idea what to say to the CHP. Leonard spoke to them and conveyed the situation.
Within a short time a CHP had pulled up behind us with lights flashing so as to get the cars in the fast lane to go around us with some caution. We were then able to open the door, and step carefully out and talk with the very nice officer. Still a very exhilarating act with cars flying by only feet from us!
By this time we were already eating, drinking and having a good old time inside the no longer operable RV. After about 30 minutes the CHP had the entire freeway shut down and rerouted to the nearest exit. Thus, causing thousands of people to now have to take a detour.
Shortly thereafter, the officer used his patrol car to push Steve's motor home off of the freeway to the nearest exit, which seemed like a mile away. When we got the thing parked at the gas station there, we once again used my cell phone to call for a handful of other friends and family to come pick us up.
Everyone of my friends on board went out to get their first cell phones the next few days. It's now a fact of life. We're always going to have these things and they're always going to become outdated quickly.
